About

Out of the Shadows

Every year, more than 65,000 make a suicide attempt. More than 1 million contacts are made to Lifeline for support.

Since 2012, Lifeline has been observing World Suicide Prevention Day with Out of the Shadows – local walks around the nation providing a safe space for communities to come together and remember those lives lost to suicide, and support those impacted by suicide.

Through connection and the voices of others, we unite to raise awareness and overcome the stigma surrounding suicide and suicide prevention.

This year you can join us and make a difference by taking a walk with your community, planting a thought in our virtual garden to remember a loved one lost to suicide, or connecting and talking through diverse stories of Australians impacted by suicide.

How will you take action?

World Suicide Prevention Day

The World Health Organization estimates that over 800,000 people worldwide, die by suicide each year – that’s one person every 40 seconds.

Sadly in the last reporting period, in Australia there were 3,318 lives lost to suicide.

The tragic ripple effect means that there are many, many more people who have been bereaved by suicide or have been close to someone who has tried to take their life, as well as those struggling to manage suicidal ideation.
