We're walking to remember Pippa

Hey crew,

This year, Mum and I have decided to raise some money for Lifeline by doing a 9K walk in honour of my sister, Pippa.

As many of you know, we lost Pippa to suicide back in 2015.
For those who didn’t know her, Pippa was a pretty polarising public figure at times. She was outspoken, fiercely intelligent and never particularly interested in making herself more palatable for other people.

She was a fierce advocate for the legalisation of sex work, but more importantly, for the fair, safe and equitable treatment of women working in an industry that is so often overlooked, judged and frowned upon.

But there was also so much more to her than what people may have seen publicly.

She was an incredibly generous woman and a vivid, intricate writer. She had an enormous capacity to put other people ahead of herself. There were times she risked her own safety for others, and countless times she went without money, food or experiences because somebody else needed those things more than she did.

That was Pip.

Mum was unfortunately the one who found her, and she has lived with an immense amount of trauma from experiencing something no mother should ever have to witness.

For me, I’ve spent more than 10 years dealing with my grief in what I now realise was a pretty terrible way.
I buried it.

I drank. I took drugs. I did whatever I could to numb it and cover up the grief I was feeling rather than actually deal with it. And somewhere along the way, I think I buried a lot of the memories too.

Pippa and I shared some incredible memories, but there are so many things I honestly struggle to remember now. That probably hurts more than I’ve ever really admitted.

I hope that one day some of those memories come back. The brain is a crazy thing when it comes to grief and trauma.

I also carry a lot of guilt that I haven’t done something like this in her name over the past 10 years. I can’t change that, but I can do something now. So this year, Mum and I are going to give it a red hot crack.

Anyone who knows me well knows I’m usually the person who’ll donate when someone else is raising money, but I’m not the type to ask people for much myself. I don’t often put my hand out and ask for help.

But I’m asking now.

I’m asking everyone who can to get behind us, unite around something that affects far too many families, and give whatever you can spare. It doesn’t have to be a lot. If enough people give a little, it can make a genuine difference.

I’m completely aware that I’m posting this less than 10 days out from the event, but if you can spare anything at all to support Lifeline and suicide prevention, it would genuinely mean a lot to Mum, to me and to our family.

I hope none of you ever have to experience what our family has been through, particularly the pain of a parent having to bury their child. Mum still carries that pain, and Dad lived with an immense amount of it too. I don’t think a parent ever truly recovers from something like that.

And if you’re not in a position to donate, that is completely fine. I know how tough things are for a lot of people at the moment.

All I ask is that you check in on your mates. Lend an ear. Have the uncomfortable conversation. Ask twice when someone says they’re fine but something tells you they’re not.

You genuinely never know what someone might be carrying.
