In South Australia, 240 lives were lost to suicide in 2024. Those 240 people were not just numbers. They were mums, dads, friends, family members, brothers, and sisters. Each loss has left behind loved ones who continue to grieve. 240 lives. 240 stories

Mental health is something that both Grace and I understand on a very personal level. We both live with our own mental health challenges, and we know how difficult it can be when you feel overwhelmed, misunderstood or like no one truly understands what you’re going through.

This World Suicide Prevention Day, September 10, Grace and I are taking part in Out of the Shadows and walking together to raise awareness and understanding of mental health. We’re walking as two people who have experienced our own battles, and we want to help remind others that they are not alone.

For me, Alina, this walk represents my own journey with mental health and how far I have come. It also represents the importance of having people around you who listen, care and support you without judgement. Having Grace beside me makes this walk even more meaningful because we understand each other’s experiences and can support one another.

We are walking to help create a world where talking about mental health is normal, where people feel safe asking for help, and where nobody feels ashamed of struggling.

We’re also walking to raise funds for Lifeline and support the important work they do for Australians experiencing difficult times. Every donation, conversation and act of support can help make a difference.
