For Hui, and for everyone we wish was still here

This September, I’ll be taking part in Out of the Shadows, walking 9km for the 9 Australians lost to suicide every day.

For me, this walk is deeply personal. I’m walking in memory of my best friend, Hui, who I lost to suicide.

Behind every statistic is a person, and behind every person are family, friends and loved ones whose lives are forever changed.

Tragically, every year more than 65,000 Australians attempt to take their own lives, and over 3,000 Australians die by suicide. Lifeline receives over one million contacts from people in crisis each year.

I believe we can all do more to raise awareness of mental health and suicide prevention - in our workplaces, our communities, our families and among our friends. We can have more open conversations, check in on the people around us, and create spaces where people feel safe to say when they’re struggling.

For World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September, I’ll be taking part in Out of the Shadows, walking in Hui’s memory and raising funds for Lifeline to provide crisis support and suicide prevention services to Australians in need.
