9km Out of the Shadows, Towards the Light

This September, I’m walking 9km in the Out of the Shadows Walk.

I know something about what it means to struggle with suicide, and it has left me with a tenderness for the suffering we cannot see. It made me realise how frighteningly easy it is to be surrounded by people and still feel completely alone.

Depression is heavy enough on its own, but there is another kind of weight in feeling unseen and unheard, in needing somewhere soft to land and finding there is nowhere. My own experiences have made me want to advocate for the people whose pain is easy to miss, because suffering doesn’t always announce itself loudly. Sometimes it goes to class, goes to work, laughs with friends, and comes home exhausted from pretending to be okay.

We shouldn’t have to keep losing people to understand the weight of suicide or the importance of prevention. And prevention doesn’t always look like some huge intervention. Sometimes it is checking in on a friend who has gone quiet, listening a little longer, inviting someone along, giving them something to look forward to, or simply reminding someone that there is a place for them in your life.

So I’m walking for those we have lost, those who came close, and those still carrying more than anyone knows. Because being seen can be a lifeline. Being heard can be a lifeline. Being loved can be a lifeline.

9km, out of the shadows towards a world where fewer people are left alone in the dark, and more are reminded there is still light ahead 🤍

My impact so far
