We're walking to ensure nobody has to face their darkest moments alone

Sunday, September 13th @ 9:00am - Drummoyne
Tragically, every year over 65,000 Australians attempt to take their own life and over 3,000 Australians die by suicide. Lifeline receives over 1 million contacts from people in crisis each year.
World Suicide Prevention Day is September 10th. To honour this day, people across Australia will be taking part in the “Out of the Shadows” walk and fundraiser to ensure that Lifeline remains free of charge for all Australians. Communities across the country are coming together and walking 9km - that’s 1km for every Australian we tragically lose to suicide every day - on a day, time and location that works for them.
Let me share a little of my story…
It was 21 years ago, on an otherwise ordinary Saturday in October 2005, that I nearly lost my life to suicide. While outwardly succeeding at life and studying abroad, my mental health was on a downward spiral. On this particular day, I was exhausted and overwhelmed and ultimately felt that I’d pursued all other options – I had no more hope. I truly felt that life would be better for everybody if I wasn’t around.
I realise this is hard to read, it’s hard to type also.
Following a series of miraculous events I’ve been given a second chance at life and I started sharing my story about ten years ago. Feelings of doubt, worry and shame always consume me: What will people think of me? Will they no longer want to be friends with me? Will they think I’m no longer capable of doing my job? When I challenge myself to move past these feelings of fear what I realise is how very fortunate I am; fortunate to have both the opportunity, and I believe the responsibility, to speak openly about mental ill health while others may still be finding their voice.
Please give as generously as you can and if you are in Sydney, please join us on Sunday 13th September for a walk around The Bay in Drummoyne starting at 9am. This year, for every donation over $39, Lifeline will gift you a “Out of the Shadows” t-shirt. (Note that t-shirts take at least a week to arrive.)
2026 will be my 5th year walking and fundraising for Lifeline alongside family, friends and colleagues. Please join me on Sunday 13th as we come together as a community of caring individuals in a movement of hope, remembrance and action.
The journey continues,
Love Sally

FAQs
Q: World Suicide prevention day is Thursday, September 10th. Why are you planning a walk on Sunday, September 13th?
A: People will be taking part in “Out of the Shadows” walks at a time and place that suits them. I plan to walk around the Bay in Drummoyne on Sunday, September 13th @ 9:00am
Q: I would like to do the walk before I take the C3 class - is that ok?
A: Absolutely! I will be walking after class but feel free to walk whenever suits you.
Q: Who or what is "C3"?
A: C3 is an amazing gym in Drummoyne full of terrific people. Our coaches are A+ and the community is full of terrific people
Q: Sally, aren’t you an R U OK? Ambassador? Why are you fundraising for Lifeline?
A: Yes, that’s correct, I am an R U OK? Community Ambassador and will be speaking at several events across Sydney this year. Lots of different groups and services combine to make a mentally healthy community. R U OK? is a suicide prevention charity that encourages people to stay connected and have meaningful conversations that can help others through difficult times whereas Lifeline provides a free 24/7 service to those in crisis. By supporting Lifeline we help ensure that these critical services remain free of charge for all Australians.
Q: I can’t make it to Sydney and/or I can’t attend on the day, can I still contribute?
A: Absolutely! I would love for you to join by making a donation to my team and by spreading the word to family and friends and encourage their support. If you walk 9km in your own community, I would love to see photos!
