It’s common to hear the word ‘coward’ roll of the tounges of people who haven’t lived it, or don’t understand it. I am none of these things… these words are far from helpful, they do not empower the suffering nor do they make you ‘snap out of it’. "I’m walking with a heavy heart, but with hope. 💛 I lost my brother Anthony John Cain to suicide in 2007, across the road from the Brothers Leagues Club Ipswich on Wildey Street. The following year, 2008, my life was turned upside down. I was told I needed brain surgery that could leave me either dead or in a vegetative state, but I survived. Then I endured the worst pain any parent could imagine: I lost two children to SIDS and Myocarditis this completely destroyed me as a parent, no child should pass before their parent 😥 These losses have left me with ABI, IED, SEIZURES and also Complex PTSD with other multiple mental health issues. On top of that, I’ve recently had spinal surgery which makes every step of this walk even harder. Some days can be very challenging 🥴 but we push through. I'm now a full time single parent to my 9-year-old son and we will be walking 27km for Lifeline’s Out of the Shadows Walk, to raise $1,170 enough to answer 30 crisis calls. We are doing this so other families hopefully don’t have to go through what mine have, and be left to pick up the pieces and the amount of hurt and pain. "In Memory of Charlie Charlie was the life of the party. He had this incredible ability to light up any room he walked into. He was the fun guy, the guy who somehow became everyone’s friend. His laugh was completely contagious, when Charlie laughed, you couldn’t help but laugh with him. But behind all that fun was something even more beautiful. Charlie was an amazing dad. He loved his children with everything he had. He loved his family fiercely, and he loved his country just as deeply. He was always reminding our kids how lucky they were and teaching them to appreciate what they had. And he loved me in a way I will carry with me for the rest of my life. Charlie knew how to make my heart do somersaults in my chest. He loved unconditionally. He had the kindest heart, and he would have given you the shirt off his back if you needed it. Charlie had so many wonderful qualities, so many values, so much love, so much life in him. But he was also fighting a battle that so many people never saw. He was fighting demons in his mind that ultimately became too loud, too painful and too overwhelming. And those demons took him away from us far too soon. His death has robbed our family of a lifetime of moments we were meant to share with him, the birthdays, graduations, weddings, grandchildren, celebrations and all those ordinary little moments that make up a life. Our lives have been turned completely upside down. I lost my husband. My children lost their dad. Our family lost a part of itself. And there are days when the grief feels unbearable. I died inside with Charlie the day he took his own life. Grief hurts. His absence hurts. And learning how to live in a world without Charlie hurts in ways I never knew were possible. But in September 13, I choose to walk for him. I walk because I want Charlie’s story to reach someone who is struggling in silence. I want it to reach the dad who thinks his family would be better off without him. The husband who believes he is a burden. The person who is smiling on the outside while fighting an unimaginable battle on the inside. Please hear me. Your family does not need a perfect version of you. They need you. Please tell someone. Please ask for help. Please stay. Because life is not better without you. "1997 Therapist #1 - There was detail I intentionally hid, a time only a year earlier when I ran, quitting my job, rental and boyfriend to go backpacking in South America. At the midpoint of my travels I was in Peru, four days on the Inca Trail, over Dead Woman’s Pass at 4,200-metres, each breath a battle, but I’d made it: Machu Picchu. Then, my ultimate challenge, a steep 2,700-metre ascent of stairs and boulders. Arriving at the exposed peak I looked over the lost city. The views, breathtaking. I had conquered. At the summit, I stood poised. Ready. Five years on from launching myself out the window at gunpoint, all I could think of was doing the same. I was overwhelmed by the urge to leave my chasmic pain behind, ending it all. And so, I buried my suicidal thoughts, as though they’d never existed, fearing judgment, being put on record, or worse, being locked up for my own safety. 2024 - All this time no one knew, I was either lucky or unlucky to still be alive. The thoughts would creep back in, testing my will, isolation was the harshest. Logically, I knew I wasn’t alone and I was loved, but it still festered. It took a lifetime to learn to express myself when that parasite fed, acknowledging those feelings would eventually pass. I knew I had to talk about it, openly. Years on, in a still moment, I was able to acknowledge how fiercely powerful I had been to resist all those times, and on that mountain top in South America. Somehow, I had now recognised there was an unknown beyond my suffering. Something. That girl wasn’t crazy, possessed, or broken. She was never selfish. She was traumatised, craving a lifeline from her bone deep torture. My impulses at the edge of despair, they were the remnants of my past. The greatest news of all, I no longer have intrusive thoughts of suicide. I now recognise they were never truly mine, they were a savage inheritance of my abusive past. Now I can be there for others, offering my support and an understanding of their pain. Remaining present for others, at last I am present for myself, honouring my soul. My greatest learning has been that fearlessness can be found in vulnerability, and in that space, healing begins."

"Evey was an incredibly bright star who dedicated herself to helping others. One of life’s true empaths, she persevered to overcome her own fragility, and to understand how to navigate the vagaries and challenges of the world, always trying, in her own way, to “put things back together”. Striving to avoid harm, Evey had an incredible capacity to forgive. With hindsight, perhaps one would have nudged her a little more to forgive herself. Evey worked as a social worker for Headspace in the area of youth suicide and was also volunteering for Lifeline at the time of her passing. "World Suicide Prevention Day is coming 💛 In 2011, I lost my sister to suicide. She was kind, intelligent, loved, and someone whose absence has shaped so much of the person I am today. Since losing her, a huge part of my life has been driven by one hope: that somehow, in whatever way I can, I can help prevent another person from reaching a place where they believe there is no other way forward. For a long time, I thought I understood what that darkness looked like from the outside. Then in 2025, I found myself facing some of my own darkest moments. I learnt what it feels like to be the person who is always there for everyone else, only to suddenly feel like you have no one there for you. I learnt how isolating life can become when you’re struggling behind closed doors. And I learnt just how much a conversation, an act of kindness, a person checking in, or simply knowing someone genuinely cares can matter. But here I am. Still here. Still going. And incredibly grateful that I am. 💛 So this World Suicide Prevention Day, I want to turn both my sister’s story and my own into something meaningful. I’m raising money to support suicide prevention and the people who may currently be fighting battles the rest of us cannot see. I want to put back into the world the kindness, selflessness, compassion and strength that we all need from one another sometimes. "Sam Boxhall Sam was 28 when he died by suicide Born in Tassie in 1996 his family moved to Port Macquarie when he was 9. He completed primary school at Tacking Point and moved to Wauchope for High School. He was a much loved larrikin who excelled at making people laugh and feel Loved. Sam went on to be a builder for 10 Years after school and lived for his family and friends and making them happy. His Brother Jay, Sister Madi and nephew and niece were such a special part of his life. His pleasure in life was fishing and footy. My dad was a veteran — a strong, brave man who served his country, but like so many veterans, he carried battles long after his service had ended. PTSD is something that can be invisible to everyone around you, yet absolutely devastating to the person living with it. Behind these photos was a father, a veteran, a man who was loved deeply, and someone whose life meant so much more than the struggles he carried. I’m sharing his story because mental health, particularly among our veterans, needs to be spoken about. There should never be shame in struggling, asking for help, or admitting that you’re not okay. We need to keep checking on the people we love, even the ones who seem strong. Dad, I wish you could have seen yourself through my eyes and known just how loved and important you were. "When I was in Year 5, I had a teacher named Chen Fei Yang. He was everyone’s favourite — young, lively, funny and kind. He had a way of understanding us and making us laugh. To us, he often felt more like a friend than simply a teacher. One afternoon after school, I saw him riding past me on his motorbike. Normally I would have called out and said hello, but that day he turned his face away. I still remember his eyes. They were red, as though he had been crying. As a child, I remember thinking it was strange to see a grown man cry. I knew something about him seemed different that day, but I was too young to understand what I was seeing. The next day, we learned that he had died by suicide. We later heard that he had been under enormous pressure surrounding his upcoming marriage and the expectations placed upon him. His death devastated all of us. We were only children, but losing someone we loved and admired in that way stayed with many of us for years. As I grew older and experienced more of life myself, I often thought back to that afternoon. I wondered what might have happened if one of us had stopped and spoken to him. Maybe someone would have made one of the silly jokes he always made for us. Maybe we could have reminded him, even for a moment, that he mattered to so many people. I know now that no single conversation can be assumed to change what someone is going through, and none of us could have known the depth of his pain. But I have never forgotten his eyes. More than anything, I wish he could have seen himself through the eyes of the children who adored him. I wish he had known how many lives he had already touched, and how deeply his absence would be felt. More than twenty years later, I still remember you, Teacher Chen. And whenever I think of you, I am reminded that sometimes the person who makes everyone else laugh may be carrying a pain nobody can see. So ask. Stay a little longer. Listen. Be kind. You may never know how much that small moment of human connection means to someone."
