Suicide: the statistics behind the issue

Suicide continues to have a devastating impact on the whole world, living in Australia and being from the UK, I have focused on these areas. 2025 statistics have not been finalised for Australia.

In Australia:

3,307 people died by suicide in 2024 — around 9 deaths every day.
76.5% were male.
The suicide rate was 12.2 deaths per 100,000 people.
The median age was around 46 years.

In England & Wales

In 2025, 5,728 suicides were registered in England, which is equivalent to a provisional rate of 11.1 suicide deaths per 100,000 people; this was the same as the rate recorded for 2024.
The rate for men was 17.6 per 100,000, compared with 5.7 for women.
Men aged 50–54 had the highest age-specific rate at 27.5 per 100,000.
Middle-aged adults are one of the highest-risk groups.

Behind these numbers are often multiple contributing factors, including mental health difficulties, previous self-harm, relationship problems, loneliness, substance use, unemployment, financial difficulties and social disadvantage. Suicide is rarely the result of one single factor. It is often the result of several pressures coming together.

These numbers represent people, families and communities. Talking openly about suicide, recognising when someone is struggling and helping people access support can make a life-saving difference.
