Walking for mom

Three years ago, my world changed forever when I lost my mom to suicide. The grief has been deep, complex, and at times overwhelming, a reminder of how invisible battles can feel all-consuming for those we love.

This year, I became a mother myself. My little boy is the greatest blessing, a miracle I truly believe was sent by my mom. Becoming a mom has been the most beautiful, humbling and life-changing experience, but also one of the hardest without her here. I miss her in every moment, from the big milestones to the quiet in-between times. Moms are our greatest cheerleaders through thick and thin, and I often find myself wishing I could hear her encouragement, her advice, and her laughter as I step into this new chapter. Motherhood has made her absence feel even sharper, and yet it has also given me a new appreciation for the love she gave so freely.

For World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September, I will be taking part in Out of the Shadows and walking 63km between 10 and 16 September, in honour of the nine people lost to suicide every single day in Australia. I will be walking for my mom, for those we have lost, and for the conversations that can save lives. And I will not be walking alone, my little boy will be right there with me, a reminder of the hope and love that carry us forward.

Mental health struggles are real and they are not a weakness. Talking about them, reaching out, checking in on those around us, these small acts can make a huge difference.

If you are struggling, please know you are not alone. If you know someone who is, remind them of their worth and that support is available.

Let’s keep conversations about mental health alive, reduce stigma, and hold space for those who need it most.
