Out of the Shadows Walk — My Story, My Purpose, My Why
Every year, thousands of Australians face moments so dark they feel impossible to carry alone. On World Suicide Prevention Day, I’m stepping into the early morning light for the Out of the Shadows Walk — not just to remember those we’ve lost, but to stand with every person who is still fighting their way through.
For me, this walk isn’t just an event. It’s personal.
I’ve seen how deeply mental health struggles can affect people — friends, family, classmates, teammates, people who seem fine on the outside but are carrying storms inside. I’ve watched people I care about go through things they never deserved, and I’ve learned how important it is to show up, to listen, and to make sure no one feels like they’re facing their hardest moments alone.
I’m walking because I believe in connection. I’m walking because I believe in hope. I’m walking because I believe every single person deserves to stay.
Every day in Australia, 9 people die by suicide, and more than 65,000 attempt to take their own life each year. Behind every number is someone’s child, someone’s best friend, someone’s teammate, someone’s whole world. The impact ripples through families, schools, communities — and it never leaves.
Lifeline receives over 1 million contacts from people in crisis every year. That’s one million moments where someone reached out instead of giving up — and one million chances to save a life. That’s why I’m raising funds: so Lifeline can keep answering those calls, keep offering support, and keep being there for people who need someone to stay with them in the dark.
This walk is my way of honouring those we’ve lost, supporting those who are still here, and helping build a future where reaching out is easier, safer, and never something to be ashamed of.
If you choose to support my walk, you’re not just donating — you’re helping someone find a reason to stay. You’re helping someone feel heard. You’re helping someone make it through the night.
Together, we can make sure no one has to face their shadows alone.
