Walking Out of the Shadows – Why This Walk Matters to Me

Every year in Australia, over 65,000 people attempt suicide and more than 3,000 lives are lost. For me, these aren’t just numbers; I lost my mother and my sister to suicide. Their absence is something I carry with me every day, and a heartache I have to live with for the rest of my life.

Suicide is complex and deeply painful, and yet it’s something many still find hard to talk about. But silence only adds to the stigma. We need to speak openly, so no one feels they have to face their darkest moments alone.

On World Suicide Prevention Day (Sept 10), I’ll be walking 9km for the 9 Australians lost every day. I’m walking in memory of my mum and sister, and to raise funds for Lifeline, who answer over a million calls for help each year.
